A Real Forum: AI and the Future of Work, MKAI, UK

On 24th April 2024 MKAI.org organised a significant event at the South Central Institute of Technology to discuss “AI and the Future of Work.” The meeting aimed to challenge and address unclear narratives about AI’s impact on employment. This forum, led by Richard Foster-Fletcher, Paul Levy, Jaisal Surana and Monika Manolova, PhD, brought together key figures from the MKAI community to explore the genuine effects of AI on job markets, necessary skills and educational priorities beyond common discussions.

The belief that “AI generates more new jobs or replaces traditional jobs” was openly debated. Is this statement genuinely accurate, or are there additional factors to consider? We analysed the current media narrative, highlighting its limitations and discussing the ethical concerns regarding AI and its effects on the job market.

Open Conversation

At the event, the forum focused on AI’s impact on various fields: What’s the truth about AI and employment today and in the future? Which skills are crucial in a technology-focused environment? How can educational institutions evolve to keep pace with these changes? These discussions led to thinking about a new and solid AI policy decision.

Report and Recommendations

In response to this event, we had the great opportunity to contribute to a report entitled “A Real Conversation about AI and the Future of Work: Insights and Pathways”. This report summarises our in-depth discussions and analyses of how AI impacts employment. It offers practical insights for various stakeholders, including educators, government leaders and corporate executives.
